Our mission to make swimming more accessible!

We are constantly looking for ways to make swimming more accessible for the swimmer and coach.

Swim sets and their instructions can sometimes be complicated for new swimmers to understand. But, we also understand that swim sets can also be used as a powerful tool to communicate complex training patterns for the advanced swimmer.

How to best utilise Simma for the swimmer

DISCLAIMER: Please note that swim sets can only be utilised using Apple Watches and therefore, this feature cannot be accessed on a Garmin or Fitbit.

The section below provides a guide as to how best create swim sets, strategies to apply and use colour, instructions, target paces and cycle times, as well as setting equipment required for the set in Simma so that it can be visualised, communicated and delivered all in one succinct swim set that your swimmer can access on their Apple Watch!!

Let's look at some swim set!

EXAMPLE 1: THRESHOLD FREESTYLE SET FOR THE ADVANCED SWIMMER

Below is an example of an advanced swim set, which involves 4 segments of swimming each with their own instructions, rest, equipment and pace for the swimmers to follow.

This set below should be interpreted as displayed on the right.

SET NAME: 'Threshold Free'

TOTAL DIST1700 m

EQUIPMENTFins (as shown by the shaded fins icon)

MAIN SET:

3x200 FR @ TEMPO PACE on a 4:00 cycle

Swimmer should target to hit each at 3:40 (and try to get ~20s rest)

5x100 FR @ THRESHOLD PACE on a 1:55 cycle

Swimmer should target to hit each at @1:45 (and try to get ~10s rest)

100 FR EZ WITH FINS @ ENDURANCE PACE (max time allowed is 2:18)

5x100 FR @ THRESHOLD PACE on a 1:50 cycle

Swimmer should target holding 1:45 pace (this time with less rest ~5s)

CURRENT PACESwimmer's current pace is 0

CURRENT HEART RATESwimmer's current heart rate is at 79 bpm

EXAMPLE 2: SPLIT WARM UP SEY FOR AN INTERMEDIATE SWIMMER

Below is an example of an intermediate split warm-up set, that involves split segments. Here the swimmer is instructed to swim different strokes within the continuous distance

This set below should be interpreted as displayed on the right.

SET NAME: 'Back/Free Warm-Up'

TOTAL DIST600

EQUIPMENTFins (as shown by the shaded fins icon)

WARM-UP SET:

2x300 @ 4:10

200 FR EASY PACE with FINS (no rest)

100 BK EASY PACE with FINS

CURRENT PACESwimmer's current pace is 0

CURRENT HEART RATESwimmer's current heart rate is at 0 bpm

Swim Instructions

The swim instructions are the most important element on the screen.

Our watch design allows swimmers to see up to 4 lines of swim instructions at a time. These could be 4 segments or a segment split into up to 4 distances, they will all employ the same visual.

The swim instruction can be broken down as follows:

  • The single or set of distance to be swum                    4x100
  • The pace denoted by the colour of the text                4x100
  • The stroke or drill to be swim                                        100 BACK
    • note: the absence of a stroke indicates Free    2x300
  • The target and cycles times for the swimmer
  • The use of any equipment

We look at the design in more detail below:

Use of colours

We use colour to communicate the pace of a swim instruction. Based on your personalised threshold pace (FTP). The table below shows you the range of paces built into Simma and where they are set relative to the swimmer's FTP for Freestyle. Remember as a coach, you can change the language and terminology of each pace.

Target and Cycle Times

We use two type of time indicators to communicate to a swimmer what pace we want them to hit.

TARGET TIME
Denotes how long it should take a swimmer to finish the lap/distance. Colours will be based on the pace that coaches has set (again, based on your threshold pace/FTP),

CYCLE TIME
Denotes the full time of the interval, before moving onto the next section. This incorporates both your swim and rest intervals and keeps you moving efficiently via your set.

A selection or combination of both TARGET TIMES and CYCLE TIMES will be provided only in the following instances:

  • TARGET TIMES & CYCLE TIMES are provided for FREESTYLE instructions without any equipment
  • CYCLE TIMES are provided for FREESTYLE  instructions with equipment
  • CYCLE TIMES are provided for all of the major strokes FREESTYLE, BACKSTROKE, BREASTSTROKE and BUTTERFLY but are all based on your FREESTYLE pace so will be fast for the other strokes. We are currently on this feature.

Using Equipment

If any instruction for the set includes the use of equipment, then the specific equipment icon is included in the set summary header. The equipment icon is also included on the specific Segments instruction line.
