Using Segments and Split Sets in Simma


If you have not created a set in Simma yet, there is a simpler guide to creating your first set!


Simma is designed to optimise creating swim sets and 

streamline the delivery of instructions, sent straight to your swimmer's watch!


In Simma, you can create sets using two methods! Both are designed to ensure quick swim set creation and can be sent to the swimmer's watch. The only difference is that each method has their own strengths and may suit different coaching methods, particular sets, or different swimmers!


1. Creating sets with multiple segments


Catered more towards the intermediate and/or advanced swimmer, this method enables coaches to connect multiple segments, which is part of a more longer, complex swim set, without requiring the swimmer to interact with the watch. That means that your swimmers can have the watch running in the background while they swim that segment of their set, without touching their watch or worrying about their watch. These sets would have set "rests", different distances and/or paces. Coaches would typically create their "main sets" using this method, as it may involve multiple segments! 



For example: 


Sprint and tempo swimming over different distances with a 100 easy kick with fins in the middle to transition between workloads for a intermediate triathlete like the set below; 


a) 8x50 FR SPRINT w/ 20s rest

b) 100 EZ KICK w/ FINS

c) 3x200 FR TEMPO w/ 20s rest

d) 6x100 FR THRESHOLD PACE w/ 10s rest



CREATING SWIM SET: Initial set-up

  1. If creating in SET LIBRARY, enter Set FTP as 1:30 OR if creating in a Workout enter WORKOUT FTP as 1:30
  2. Enter SET NAME and DESCRIPTION (optional)
  3. Leave SET REPEAT as 1
  4. Select FLAVOUR as 'MAIN SET'
  5. Change NUMBER OF SEGMENTS to 4, the UI will open up 4 Segment details containers for you to complete


CREATING SEGMENT A: 8x50 FR SPRINT w/ 20s rest


 


  1. Click into Segment Details for first Segment
  2. Enter Segment repeats as 8
  3. Change distance to 50
  4. Select stroke/drill as Freestyle
  5. Select Effort as Sprint (Target time will be calculated and entered for you)
  6. Make rest 20s (Cycle time will be calculated and entered for you)
  7. Leave equipment selection empty


CREATING SEGMENT B: 100 EZ KICK w/ FINS 


  1. Click into Segment Details for second Segment
  2. Leave Segment repeats as 1
  3. Leave Distance as 100
  4. Select stroke/drill as Freestyle
  5. Select Effort as Easy (Target time will be calculated and entered for you)
  6. Leave rest as 0:00 or add as you prefer (Target time will be calculated and entered for you)
  7. Select Equipment as fins


CREATING SEGMENT C: 3x200 FR TEMPO w/ 20s rest 



  1. Enter Segment repeats as 3
  2. Change Distance to 200
  3. Select stroke/drill as Freestyle
  4. Select Effort as Tempo (Target time will be calculated and entered for you)
  5. Make rest 20s (Target time will be calculated and entered for you)
  6. Select Equipment as paddles


CREATING SEGMENT D: 6x100 FR THRESHOLD PACE w/ 10s rest


 

  1. Enter Segment repeats as6
  2. Leave Distance as 100
  3. Select stroke/drill as Freestyle
  4. Select Effort as Aerobic (Target time will be calculated and entered for you)
  5. Make rest 10s (Target time will be calculated and entered for you)
  6. Leave Equipment selection empty


TO FINISH: Submit the Set or Lock the set if you are in the Workout Creator.


 

That's it, you can preview the set at any time. 

It should look like this, a solid intermediate 

set with Multiple Segments.




2. Sets that Split the Segment


Useful for more warm-ups, drill sets and/or IM sets, this method enables coaches to divide up a single continuous swim distance into different stroke and/or efforts. Useful when creating sets where you switch strokes mid-lap or during drills. These typically won't have rest at intervals within a distance and so Simma will continuously measure your swim distance accurately without adding extra laps to your total swim distance.
