Creating Swim Sets in Simma

Created by Coaching Support, Modified on Thu, 29 Aug at 10:19 PM by Kanon Uchiyama

The following is a guide to creating a set in Simma and is relevant whether you are creating the set as part of a workouts or as a reusable set in your set library.

First, set a threshold pace.

All sets must have a set threshold pace, which you can set here.

If you are creating the swim set as part of a larger swim workout, this step is not necessary as the workout would have already prompted you to set a threshold pace (FTP) when you entered. However, if you are creating the swim set as a reusable set (in your set library), then you will be prompted to set a threshold pace, before you will be able to move on.

Entering a threshold pace, enables Simma to apply freestyle pace bands for you when creating the swim segments and instructions to calculate target times and pace labels and also enables the set to be scaled for your swimmers.

While it may be the desired pace of the set,

it can also become a reference pace for you to create,

if it's being saved into your set library.

When a swimmer views the set in Simma, the set will automatically rescale paces to the swimmer's threshold pace! Target and cycle times will also then be scaled to that swimmer.

P.S. It is important for coaches to note that rest will be maintained as it was initially entered in the original set. More beginner-level swimmers will require more rest so ensure you adjust these, if threshold paces don't match!

Creating swim sets

Once threshold pace is entered, you will be presented with the following interface to create a set.

Enter set details

You will need to enter the following details to create a set. At anytime you can click on the 'eye' icon to see what the set will look like when presented on the swimmer's Apple Watch when swimming the set (or visualise here). Make sure you enter the following;

  • SET NAME: A very short description of the set.
  • OPTIONAL DESCRIPTION OF SET: A longer description
  • SET REPEATS: The number of times the swimmer is to repeat all segments in the set.
  • FLAVOUR: The flavour of a set can be one of Warm Up, Main Set or Cool Down. This attribute of the set can be used to help you manage and find things in your set library.
  • NUMBER OF SEGMENTS: The number of segments of swimming in the set. A segment of swimming is a pattern or repeated patter of swimming with it's own:
    • Distance
    • Repeat pattern
    • Stroke, drill or mix of these
    • Effort
    • Target, cycle and rest times
    • Equipment or no equipment

Enter segment details

Let's look at the simplest scenario for a single segment with no splits.

For example for a beginner swimmer (threshold pace of 2:00/100m)

6x100 FREESTYLE @ THRESHOLD PACE with PADDLES (~10s rest in between each 100)

Steps to create this set are as detailed on the right

1. Enter SET NAME & DESCRIPTION

2. Enter SEGMENT REPEAT as 6

3. Enter SEGMENT DISTANCE as 100

4. Select STROKE as Freestyle

5. Select EFFORT to be 'Aerobic'

6. TARGET TIME will be calculated based on the effort band of 'Aerobic' and the Set FTP of 2:00

7. Enter the REST TIME as10s

8. The CYCLE TIME will be calculated for you as 2:10

9. Leave SPLIT SEGMENT toggled OFF

10. Select the EQUIPMENT to paddles

That's it, you can save the set if you are creating it in the set library or use the padlock icon if you are in the workout creator to lock the set from changes

At any time you can click on the 'eye' icon to preview how the set will be displayed to the swimmer when they are swimming the set as part of a workout.
